I guess the difference would be that, the man does not beleive the scarf to be actively aware of anything. It's just good luck that might help.

The guy hoping god will save him believes there is an actual intelligence that wants him to succeed, that can look at the situation and actively make changes to suit it's plan.

I think Shermer has it here ... as I recall he said clever people believe stupid things and can defend them in various clever ways. So if you believe that atheism tends to be the result of a more educated /intelligent outlook (as I do) then I'd say there's a tendency to reject other kinds of silliness too but it's not a rule and in no way does being an atheist mean you gotta have other sensible views. I've met so many people who are evangelistic (just like theists) in other subjects too and I'm sure they're thought the same of me.

In essence I'm with Luke ... it's just a matter of degree.
