God and Distaster

I've prevented many natural disasters! Every night I put on my magic hat and wave the Twig of Prevention. This protects Canada from hurricanes. It obviously works, because I don't even know when Canada last suffered a hurricane. Can you imagine how many disasters I've prevented? Canadians should be thanking me, but they never do.

That was YOU all along?? All praise Thor for keeping Canada safe!! I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you!!!

Well, at last a little recognition! I think it's time I've been rewarded for my tireless efforts. All you Canadians should start sending me some cash or I will no longer protect you from hurricanes! And US currency only! I don't want that monopoly money with pictures of birds on it.

This reminds me of a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. I don't recall the specifics, but the kid and his tiger go from one bad thing to another in rapid succession. In the final panel the kid surmises, "You know. I've discovered that things are never so bad that they can't get worse."

In short, I don't believe that everything has to be nice, sweet, and perfect for God to exist.

What's interesting is that people who live in poorer countries - which often means a greater number of illnesses, deaths, and natural disasters occurring in those places - tend to be more religious as compared to people who live in countries with higher living standards. They are the ones who see more bad things happening around them than we do, and yet, they still believe in God.

Therefore, I think that hard experiences have an effect of reminding people of God in one way or another, as it happens to me as well, though certainly not the case for everyone.

These people in poorer countries are also uneducated and unenlightened about the world. This is what causes them to become religious, not their ability to see good in god even in disaster. Ignorance is religion's best friend.

I did NOT say that God can't exist or ANYTHING about heaven, I only said the concept of omnibenevolence, which you cling to like shit to a blanket, is incompatible with the world we live in - This says nothing about deities with other attributes existing, Rayaan came straight out and said that Allah isn't omnibenevolent - At least his deity is consistent with reality in that regard.

Once again you did not answer my question, so stop rambling and show me your logical precedent demonstrating that "all loving" is compatible with "thousands of dead people who could have been saved".

If you were rescued from a life threatening event would you thank the person who saved you even though others may have died, I think you would and I know I would.

Let's say you were in a building that caught fire and dozens of people died in the inferno. However, you survived because someone dragged you out of the burning building. Would you be grateful and thank the person? I'm sure you would!

But let's say you later discover that the person who saved you is a pyromaniac and is responsible for setting the building on fire. Would you still be grateful? Or would you be angry that the asshole killed dozens of people, destroyed property and put your life in danger?

So why is thanking God any different?

Because your deity supposedly has the power to prevent disasters. Imagine there's a gas leak in your house which knocks out you and your entire family. The fire department shows up and carries you and one of your children outside to safety. However, they do nothing to stop the leak (when they could easily do so by turning a valve) and refuse to bring your spouse and other child out of the house. Finally, the gas ignites, incinerating your spouse and child, and burning your house to the ground.

Now, how do you feel about this turn of events? Do you praise the fire department for saving you and your child? Or are you angry that they did nothing to shut off the gas or retrieve the rest of your family?
