"Causing people to suffer because you hate them... is terrible. But causing people to suffer because you have forgotten how to care... that's really hard to understand."
Dr. Julian Bashir
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

When I was in the Navy, we had a saying for that- "One to drink, one to spill, and one for the Shore Patrol". Translation- the guy hasn't had a drink before, so he gets tipsy. He spills the next one, and when the Petty Officers on Shore Patrol duty out scooping up drunken sailors show up, they're his best buds, and he offers them a drink.

It looks as if Frodo and Sam were indulging in the Gaffer's home brew.
