Preppers
I used to go by the tern " survivalist" but these days I prefer just to go by " ready".

Post here your ideas, thoughts and suggestions for surviving the apocalypse in comfort and style.

.....

Post SHTF (shit hits the fan) currency -

Lots of guys think silver and gold will be the currency in the event of a catastropic economic collapse. But really - will it? It, like paper money ( or numbers on a computer screen) are only worth something if people believe it is worth something. If nobody wants it - it' s worthless.

What WILL be useful is stuff that people need, use and want. Toilet paper is good - till the mice get to it or the roof leaks. It' s also bulky and a pain to transport much.

An old boss of mine was a radio operator on the Uss Pasadena at Tokyo Bay during the surrender. He got shore leave at one point and found he could get a meal, a room for the night and a prostitute for a handful of nuts and bolts - as manufactuing there was ground to a halt and mass produced items were in short supply.

Nuts, bolts, washers, wood screws and NAILS. Nails? Nobody uses nails you say? Sure all constuction now uses screws or air nails and staples... Wait till all the battery powered stuff dies. The air comprssors wear out.  A hammer still works then.

Yesterday I went to Tractor Supply Co. I refilled my SAE nut, bolt and washer ( quarter inch up to half inch) supply. I got 40 lbs worth. 2 bucks a lbs....

I read a post-nuclear apocalypse novel some years ago (the title and author escape me) in which one of the characters read a notice pinned to a wall which read something like, ‘Have set of three cooking pans with lids, six bath towels, 20 piece spanner set, and 10 yards electric wire. Will trade for small canned ham.’

Being able to make run a still and fix electronics/radios I could see as important skills. Bartering for alcohol for medicine, hooch, fuel or weapons seems really valuable. Spools of wire and solar panels and radio/ antennae parts for barter.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

I could see hooch being currency in the post apocalyptic world. Who wouldn't need a drink, after all.

RE: Preppers
I find the entire concept absurd. Why would I want to live in a post apocalyptic word? A global nuclear war would not only destroy structures, it would poison food sources. If humans get that stupid and shoot off nukes, all I want to know is where ground zero is and be under it. I wouldn't feel a thing.

The only people who benefit from this absurd of "prepping" are the people who sell the crap you buy.

I'm with Brian on this. A world where we're fighting over a can of peaches? AND there are no creature comforts like electricity and plumbing, with risk of whatever broke the world still threatening us(nuclear fallout, virus, zombies, etc.)? No thanks. After all, when the survivors start that whole "rebuild the world" initiative, they'll only want the individuals who want to be here as part of the team anyway. Me complaining in the corner about how everyone keeps using the pages out of my favorite books as toilet paper is not likely to be helpful.

Not to mention that the unfortunate will - sooner or later - start casting a baleful eye over your goods.

That said, I don’t really see anything wrong with keeping supplies on hand as a hedge against eventualities like power outages or a contaminated water supply.

Food acquisition supplies/implements, water purification, air purification (depending in the type-o-end), medical supplies, tools, fire.

You have all the imagination of a cast iron skillet.

.....

There are a MULTITUDE of things that can cause society to fall apart. Nuclear war isn' t the only possibility.

An asteroid impact - a 90% mortality pandemic  (natural or man-made), economic collapse,
your poety gets widely read and suicide rates skyrocket.........

Any of those make it perfectly possible for survivors to live - and live well - if you are fairly well prepared.

And as Boru points out - mudane things as storms and earthquakes make it probable that you will see disruptions in electrical service and distribution of good from time to time..

I guess you just like sitting in the damp, dark night trying to get drunk on warm beer - and wolfing down all the leftover takeout food before it rots in the fridge......

It sure explains the poetry....

RE: Preppers
I'm not looking forward to any apocalypse, but the odds are good that during a person's lifetime, they'll be in a situation where there's going to be a rough few days to a week, say with no electricity or running water due to any number of catastrophes. Being prepared for that week is inexpensive and worth it if you ever have to face it. As to an acual apocalypse, maybe I'm an optimist, but I think most people will pull together to help each other survive, ant and grasshopper alike. Cooperation is the greatest survival skill our species has.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.
