The motivation of MAGA

The motivation of MAGA
Was watching news videos and there's a guy who has done a lot of research and polling on people who attended the Jan 6 insurrection and has come up with a basic motivational factor for these people.  Unsurprisingly, it is mostly white males from non-red states, educated and well paid people with good jobs and homes and such; a surprising number of business owners and doctors and lawyers and so forth.  They are basically afraid they are being replaced by brown people, or rather non-whites.  This is just another round of the usual nativism that has surged in multiple eras of US history.  I fit every category the research turned up except that I'm not religious and yet I don't have any of this fear of being replaced.  Why does this grip some people but not others.  I actually work with some people who attended rallies in their home towns on Jan 6.  The only reason they didn't go to DC was the time and costs involved.
Why is it so?

RE: The motivation of MAGA
Because they believe in the five pillars of white supremacy, and always have?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Jonathan Haidt's work on morality suggests that loyalty as a moral value is a higher priority for conservatives than liberals. To me this suggests that conservatives are easier to motivate with appeals to group identity. In effect, it's easier to get conservatives to act in a tribalistic fashion than it is to get liberals to do the same. That dynamic leaves them vulnerable to bad actors in leadership positions.

I agree that it’s largely hypernationalism fueling this thing. However, their overriding motivation seems to the the destruction of democracy, intended or not.

I don't think it's coming from bad actors in leadership positions. Those guys are pandering to the base of a white supremacist party.

Their overriding motivation is to stop white genocide, which they believe is being perpetrated by the us government. When they believe that the us government is on the site of the white man, it;s flags and hats and ra ra ra - and when they believe it's literally anything other than or less than that - treason.

They're not nationalists. They're racists.

I think that applies to a segment of conservatism, but hardly all. The base which is responding has more common elements than just race. Though Haidt also points out that purity is also higher among conservatives. Purity and group loyalty are dangerous values to have in a pluralistic society.

RE: The motivation of MAGA
A majority of white americans, and three quarters of republicans..believe in white victimization. It's time we stopped insisting that they aren't exactly what they keep telling us they are.

-and I'll add, for the hypothetically disaffected, the quarter of republicans who don't believe that, and are currently being purged top down and bottom up..simultaneously... that if you keep voting for racist policies so that you can get a tax cut..that just makes you a tax obsessed racist.

So do you think that when black and brown people riot- er- protest they are seeking racial domination as well?
