Do Chairs Exist?

Agreed. Plato wasn't an empiricist. If Brian37 wanted to criticize someone for being a "shitty scientist," he might have a go at Aristotle.

@Brian37

I take issue with calling Plato's work "mental masturbation." Plato was incredibly thoughtful and insightful. Sure, he was wrong about some things. But, I don't think Plato ever said he was right about everything, nor did he think his errors shouldn't be corrected. He made a damn good attempt at the truth and hit the nail on the head quite regularly. That's not mental masturbation. That's good philosophizing.

He was very insightful. But by comparison of what we know today, it was merely guessing.

Anyone can look up at the sun and call it the sun, but that did not mean back then they knew what the sun actually was made of.

I will defend Plato tooth and nail on his arguments of questioning everything. But he got lots wrong as well, and his idea of "essence" was his biggest mistake.

I give up.

Yes Chairs exist. It's an object. What you want to call a chair is up to you. But technically a lot of stuff can be made into a type of chair, that's a stupid angle for the question though. If we are talking about what's normally considered a chair then of course a chair exists.. it's pseudo intellectuals that would try to say no in my view

It's like a cow escaped it's pasture and has wandered into a lab at 3M. The cow doesn't seem at all disturbed, but all the lab technicians are visibly agitated.

Well, that surprised me.

The MEANING of life is the experience of living ... (from Frank Herbert)
The VALUE of life is the legacy we leave behind ..... (from observation)

If we're going to be adverse toward philosophy, it must be on the grounds that true objectivity in the field is rare. People tend to choose a philosophy to follow, much in the same way that they do with religion, because its ideas vibe with them.

Furthermore, just as we're reasonably adverse to following teachings of goat herders in a modern era, the same principle can be applied to a philosophy that has not evolved.

That's not philosophy, that's _a_ philosophy. Those aren't the same thing. You're using the word in two different senses as if they were the same. They're not.

A philosophy derives from philosophical contemplation. Don't be obtuse.

Okay, boomer. Go ahead and keep thinking you're right when you're not. I really couldn't give a fuck.
