Do Chairs Exist?

RE: Do Chairs Exist?
Personally, I blame Plato for whole Atlantis thing. He should have prefaced those dialogues with a disclaimer. Lazy bugger.

Yes. You are absolutely right. Plato makes straw arguments all the time. His logic can be very bad, and his ideas can be very poorly argued. Credit Aristotle for first examining logic and distinguishing good reasoning from bad reasoning. Plato didn't do that, otherwise he might not have made so many straw arguments, arguments from metaphor, etc.

Plato was also wrong about tons of stuff. Objectively wrong.

But the man had a vision. Nobody denies that. And he didn't preach the vision from on high. He supported it with logical argument. If there was one thing Plato prized, it's our reasonable nature. He advocated for logic and reason like nobody else, and he thought all arguments (even his own) should be subjected to rational scrutiny. And that's one thing he got right.

Some theories are stepping stones to better ideas. Sometimes when you knock down a bad idea, you learn something. Plato put down a bunch of ideas and said "Here. Knock these down if you can." Turns out, a bunch of them got knocked down. But it's cool. Plato really got the ball rolling for philosophy.

I appreciate that.

@DLJ

I think it bears mentioning that I am presenting Plato in the most charitable light possible. I'm giving him way more credit than he is due in my analysis. But only because I am ignoring all the faultiness in his theory of forms and concentrating fully on the "nugget of truth" he may have gotten right. Plato had many views concerning the immortal soul that arose after death to reunite with the forms. He (possibly) believed in reincarnation (though some people think it was metaphor).

Basically Plato thought that the soul travelled to the realm of forms after death... and then returned to a body, wherein it "recalled" the forms when it acquires knowledge in it new life.

I'm ignoring all that shit.

And there is good reason to ignore it. It isn't exactly clear that Plato thought reincarnation was real. He described it happening in many different ways. And it was always part of some myth or another that he invented as allegory. Plato loved allegory, so it's plausible that he had a more "down to earth" view than some of his writings let on.

I wanted to clear that up, because before I made it sound like Plato had a completely down-to-earth philosophy that was corrupted by the Neoplatonists. That's not entirely accurate.
