John Hinkley Jr on the loose.

If Hinkley goes off his nut again and decides to shoot more people - you' re OK with that?

He' s just defective - so bad behavior is accepted?

Just stop.

His behavior obviously was not accepted. He was deemed mentally ill and was in treatment for decades.

Fuck - I was institutionalized for trying to kill myself years ago. If it would have been thought I couldn't get better, I'd still be locked up.

Even a professional opinion is just an opinion.- and this opinion (That Hinkley is no longer a threat) is offered with no possible reprisal against the giver of this opinion.

If a structural engineer offers his opinion that an earthquake damaged building is safe - he can be held liable if it later collapses and kills someone.

Are the doctors who certify Hinkley going to be held liable if he kills again? Are they willing to share a cell with him?

There are opinions and there are opinions. In Hinckley’s case, I think the opinion of multiple mental health professionals carries more weight than the opinion of a Saturn mechanic.

Very sorry you went through that- but there is a large difference -

You never demonstrated through your actions that you were a threat to other people.

Sure it' s POSSIBLE everyone could hurt others - but Hinkley removed all doubt. he IS capable of violence against others.

He avoided the death penalty with his defense. I' d say that' s as much as he should get.

It’s more accurate to say he WAS capable of violence against others.

Yeah, they were so sure that I was okay after treatment they sent me back home to take care of two small children, without supervision. You don't think someone who is bent on doing themselves in could be a risk to a baby and a pre-schooler? Nonsense.

Shit happens to people...mental shit. It's not necessarily something that lasts a lifetime.

He served his time...you just don't like the sentence he got.

As far as shooting people goes - I find it to be a rung bell. It can' t be un- rung. It' s a line that can't be uncrossed.

Ask yourself - would you sell Hinkley a gun?

How " was a threat" do you want to go?

If that’s the standard, then everyone who’s ever shot someone - police, combat vets, hunters, etc - should all be confined under psychiatric care forever.

I think it’s indicative of Hinckley’s progress that, for the past five years, he’s been allowed to drive - unattended - up to 30 miles from his mum’s house without managing to shoot anyone.

I’d be breaking the law if I sold Hinckley a gun. He’s not allowed to own firearms.

The NRA must be slacking. Why haven't they put a gun in his hands yet?

Quit being willfully stupid.

There is miles betweeen a justified, legal shooting and an assassination attempt on the POTUS.

Why ISN' T he allowed to own firearms if he isn' t a threat?

Answer - because he is a VERIFIED threat.

Good question. Since anyone who claims Hinkley is "OK" now, would that mean he now has the right to own a firearm? Even if you cure a drunk driver with multiple DUIs ,is it wrong to permanently ban them from driving, even if you let them out of prison?

Even outside Hinkley, our nations laws let people get out of jail/prison only to go back to repeating the same things that got them there in the first place.

Now, don't get me wrong. I am not a Trumpster, I am not a "lock them up and throw away the key".  But I do think process counts, and I don't think it is either/or.
