Juliet has a unique perspective on the issue. She’s a writer who made a name for herself writing about trans issues for major media outlets.

Around eight years ago, she could see that things were starting to get worse. Newspaper editors, once interested in platforming trans people’s stories, started to prioritise transphobic talking points pushed by a small but vocal group of self-described “gender critical” feminists.

“Particularly after the 2017 election, the mainstream media started saying, ‘No, the political issues you’re trying to bring to the table here are not acceptable to us – we will crush you,'” Juliet says. She describes that election as “a pretty empathic victory for legacy media”.

“That’s been followed by an even greater centrality of transphobia within the discourse because a lot of the more material concerns we were trying to advance got crushed.”

Today, it’s hard to see how things could be much worse. Many newspapers publish numerous articles each week pushing fear-mongering falsehoods about trans people.

Walsh has published several tweets accusing Eventbrite of being anti-conservative and hypocritical for banning the showings. In one message notifying an Eventbrite user of their screening’s cancellation, the service wrote, “We do not permit events, content, or creators that promote or encourage hate, violence, or harassment towards others and/or oneself.”

Not necessarily a newspaper, but here’s a recent article from the BBC that’s notorious for being transphobic.

And, originally,
it was even worse. Specifically, it included some statements from Lily Cade, lesbian porn star who, A) has her own history of sexual assault, and B) turned out to have some horrifyingly Nazi-adjacent views, up to including saying shif like “If you left it up to me, I'd execute every last [trans woman] personally".

Yeah, part of the problem is that, once in a while you hear a story about someone who identifies as a cat or an elephant or as a baby and all the transphobes latch onto that and claim all identities without a concrete, physical definition are just as ridiculous as a human identifying as a giant miniature space hamster.

The four obvious problems to that thinking are that:

1) crazy, extremists like the lizard-kin get attention because they’re crazy and extreme but most trans people are not like them

2). There’s less difference between a man and a woman than there is between a human and a chimpanzee (and genetically speaking, humans are closer to chimps than anything).

3). Those weird identities are usually kids, teenagers, doing what teenagers do: figuring out what and who they are. Kids today have far more freedom to explore, especially in regards to gender and sexuality, and I certainly don’t want to shame them for it. Most of them are going to grow up, mature and find a more permanent identity that’s more mainstream.

4). Even if all that doesn’t change your mind, tell me who it hurts that trans people exist?

Talking to Spain’s Cadena SER Radio, the scream queen spoke openly about the threats her daughter, Ruby, 26, has received since coming out as trans in 2020.

“I have a trans daughter. There are threats against her life just [for] her existence as a human being,” she said.

“There are people that want to annihilate her and people like her.”

Jamie Lee added: “The level of hatred… [It’s] as if we haven’t learned from fascism, [as if] we haven’t learned what the result of that is: The extermination of human beings. That is terrifying.”
