Whatever happened to Bernie Taupin? By my lights, he was the prime mover in that songwriting duo, but he seems to have slipped beneath the waves, never to be heard from again.

Bernie gave lyrics to Elton, who put them to music. I know of only one song that Elton wrote and sent to Bernie for lyrics: Philadelphia Freedom. I recommend the movie.
Here's a song Elton wrote for his own funeral that leads into a Bernie song. Their most prog.

Well that makes sense. I just assumed their writing was more collaborative. It reminds me of something I read about Steve Winwood, Dave Mason, and Traffic. Winwood was a collaborative writer, but Mason really wasn't, which made it easier for Mason to break with the group. That being said, I'm not a fan of Mason's songwriting, though I think he's an engaging performer.
