Somewhat, I suppose, although, people probably grew and made most of the necessities to support their lives, eating the food that they grew, hunting, spinning their own clothes, etc.
I doubt that capitalism provides much in the way of challenge. Socialism doesn't either - but the whole point of either arrangement is to help us solve the problems life throws at us - which it would no matter which one we chose to organize our societies by.
