Color me ignorant, but if Hitler was not a practicing Catholic (in his adulthood at least), why would the Catholic Church needed to excommunicate him?

Once you are Catholic, you are always Catholic unless excommunicated.

They won't take 'no' for an answer.  I've been away nearly four decades but am still on the rolls.

So that the nation's Catholics would not support him. It would have also shown solidarity with the jews against whom Germany's latest pogrom was in progress. But, unfortunately, Pope Pius XII had little use for the Jews.

Yeah, and Hitler was sponsoring Catholic Church, just like Putin is sponsoring Orthodox Church.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The Russian Orthodox Church wants the invasion to succeed so that it can absorb the breakaway Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

To both Putin and the Patriarch, this is about power.
