In the US (I do talk about it a lot) you can purchas assault weapons (I think)
Why? What would be the point to owning such a weapon?

I've heard many excuses for the "need" to have no ban on assault weapons. I've heard the "for hunting" excuse. I had no idea that deer and hogs were that heavily armed. I've also heard "for home protection" - which from a tactical standpoint is ridiculous for home protection. I think it's more of the whole "we want them just because we want them" and to occasionally get blitzed off of Milwaukee's Best (the Beast) and shoot up old cars on cinder blocks in the front yard. Other than that it ends up boiling down to someone muttering about the second amendment and their civil right. People want them for the same reason people buy Hummers that never leave the pavement - it makes them feel good...imho.

I can possibly understand wanting an assault rifle for a collection. I have a weapons collection of my own. However mine is arguably less harmfull. I have 2 Katanas, a small battle ax, small katana (I forget the name of them), a large dagger, and some small knives. I have a particular fondness for blades. I would never use them for any reason but I love having them as part of my collection and showing people.
I got to a lot of anime conventions and at one I was at there was a weapons booth (for swords, knives, etc...) and I know these people because I've bought weapons from them before. I ended up talking to this guy who used to be a cop. It was clear to me he supported the 2nd amendment. He told me 911 is so somebody knows to come pick up the body. (I know that's not true, I'm sure 911 saves lot's of lives) But his point was in a home invasion if you can't protect yourself, by the time a cop got their, more than likely the person was dead. It was an interesting thing to hear from a cop. Granted I'm not going to go out and get a gun, although I've always joked if ever something happened I'd run straight to my room and grab the ax. XD I guess my point at the end of this is that guns definitely should not be banned. However, even from the understanding of a collectors viewpoint, assault riffles are a little overkill and I believe in harsher regulations for automatics and semi-automatics. I would probably support a ban of them.

How could you protect someone with an assault rifle? It's not exactly the smallest thing going and it'd need to be locked away so the kids don't get to it. Making the point of defense nullified. Sport....well if you can't hit the deer with one bullet you don't deserve to own a licence. All you need a rifle, not an assult rifle.
Frankly, I think even just one bullet is unfair. If you wanna hunt a deer, get a knife and get in there mano e deero. Otherwise it's just like cheating to me.
Have you ever tried to get the jump on a deer? Even primitive man needed bow & arrow!

Ok, you can have a bow- but you have to make it yourself.
