We picked up a used (mfd 1992)Whirlpool side by side fridge/freezer from Craigslist (30 mile drive) for $200.
We brought it home, in the kitchen and I plugged it in with two digital thermometers with remote leads inside. It has cold water and ice in the door. ( previous owner swears they work) The cold water is simply a storage tank inside - so it pretty much has to work.
After 2 hours it is at 0.2F and 41.7F.
It is nearly silent compared to our 40 year old one that sounds like a car wreck each time it cycles....
