Republican Says U.S. Troops Should Enter Mexico—'Have a Military Presence'

Republican Representative James Comer has suggested the U.S. should set up troops in Mexico following a kidnapping that resulted in the deaths of two Americans.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham announced he would be introducing legislation allowing the U.S. to use military force against Mexico in order to crack down on the cartels.

Comer agreed with Graham's plan, and while speaking on Fox said a military presence is important to protecting Americans.

Yep, it's official. The Republicans have learned fuck-all from Iraq. Except this time, the insurgent groups are already there and already powerful to a terrifying degree.

Case in point: the first attempt at capturing Ovidio Guzman bore an alarming resemblance to Hank's death from Breaking Bad








Except there was one key difference... In Breaking Bad, the shootout that ended with Hank dead only intensified the search for Walter White. When it came to the actual response from the Mexican government, they actually fucking released him. He was one of the most wanted criminals on the planet, and the nation's government decided that they couldn't go through with the arrest.


That's how fucking powerful the cartels are. It's virtually impossible for a normal army to defeat a sufficiently well-supported guerrilla force without resorting to genocide even at the best of times, but this just strikes me as Too Dumb to Live even by the GOP's standards. Especially since, unlike Iraq, Afghanistan, or any of the other Middle Eastern nations, Mexico is right next door.

 Fuck, they're already complaining about how they consider people crossing the border peacefully as an invasion, and here they are working on a plan that will practically GUARANTEE a fuckton more Mexican refugees will try to cross the border.

Very true, for a variety of reasons (starting with geography, and by no means ending there) the civil and military authorities are very much not in control of the entire country.

Want an Afghanistan style conflict against an enemy who has little to constrain them from operating as a guerilla force within the USA? That's what they'll get.

Doing so would be exceptionally stupid and the suggestion is probably only intended to rile up the base.

Of course that’s the intention. Conservatives like to accuse liberals of addressing problems by ‘throwing money at them’, while everyone knows the true patriotic solution is to throw soldiers.

The only possible way this plan would make sense (assuming this is A: something they intend to do, and B: they actually did learn anything from our adventures in the Middle East) is if they decided they needed to justify the punitive measures they want for the border and the horseshit they're arguing doesn't cut it. And even then, I'd put better odds on there being an episode of SpongeBob where he actually graduates from boating school than their plan working the way they expect it to.

BBC will not broadcast Attenborough episode over fear of rightwing backlash

The BBC has decided not to broadcast an episode of David Attenborough’s flagship new series on British wildlife because of fears its themes of the destruction of nature would risk a backlash from Tory politicians and the rightwing press, the Guardian has been told.

A sixth episode has also been filmed, which is understood to be a stark look at the losses of nature in the UK and what has caused the declines. It is also understood to include some examples of rewilding, a concept which has been controversial in some rightwing circles.

President Biden is said to be moving ahead on an $8 billion oil project in Alaska, in the largest single expanse of pristine U.S. wilderness.

Alaska lawmakers and oil executives have put intense pressure on the White House to approve the project, citing President Biden’s own calls for the industry to increase production amid volatile gas prices stemming from Russia’s war against Ukraine.

But the proposal to drill for oil has also galvanized young voters and climate activists, many of whom helped elect Mr. Biden and who would view the decision as a betrayal of the president’s promise that he would pivot the nation away from fossil fuels.

The courts and Congress have forced Mr. Biden to back away from his campaign pledge of “no more drilling on federal lands, period” and sign off on some limited oil and gas leases. The Willow project would be one of the few oil developments that Mr. Biden has approved freely, without a court or a congressional mandate.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, who has championed the project, said Friday night that she had not been notified of the decision. “We are not celebrating yet, not with this White House,” she said.
