Articles of Distraction
RE: Articles of Distraction
Quote:George R.R. Martin explained why The Winds of Winter is taking so long to write

......

“The success of the show and the success of other things has injected a lot of other aspects into my life,” Martin said. “So sometimes I lay in bed at night and I’m not thinking about…Westeros. I’m thinking about some other problem I’m having, one of the other shows I’m involved with, or a deadline on an anthology I’m editing, or something that’s happening with the non-profit organization that I started. All of these other things are filling my head and that is one of the thing’s that’s delayed me. I really have to get Winds done. I have to put myself on a state where I’m not being distracted by other stuff, and that period of time at night is filled with the voices of Tyrion Lannister and Arya Stark and the other fictional characters who live inside of me.”

......

“I do sometimes wish [this success] had happened to me 30 years ago, rather than happening to me at my age, because it does kind of wear me out sometimes,” said Martin, who was 71 at the time; he’s now 75. “But I still have a fair amount of energy and I still get a fair amount done.”

A school district in Indianola, Iowa keeps parents informed of new school policies, procedures, and upcoming events via an email newsletter. A recent edition included the 'inspirational' quote, 'My honor is called loyalty.' Apparently, no one at the district was aware that the quote was the motto of the Waffen SS, and is generally attributed to Heinrich Himmler.

The school district has apologized for the faux pas.

Vatican gets a 27-meter (89-foot) Christmas tree. I say leave it to the squirrels and owls, but you know the Vatican and its love for lavish things.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Quote:Millie Bobby Brown's Damsel Will Introduce a Dragon Unlike Any Seen Before

The dragon in Netflix's Damsel isn't going to be like any incarnation of the mythical creature seen in other movies and TV shows, according to director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

.....

It may not be a true fantasy film without a fire-breathing dragon, and while Damsel will include such a creature, it's promised to be unique.

.....

“The benchmark of dragons is so high,” Fresnadillo said. "We worked hard on a new concept, a really great meeting point between fantasy creature [and] real. The dragon in this movie is a character, not only a beast but also something else."

A new species of puffball fungus has been named for the sandworms in ‘Dune’. Tulostoma shaihuludii is obviously nothing like Herbert’s sandworms, but the researchers say they chose the name as a way of emphasizing ‘the intricate connections between species and their habitats’.
