I enjoy period pieces, but I don't view them as a history lesson. Often when they are based on historical people or events, I will do a little research to see what is true and what was embellished for entertainment purposes.

I think historic accuracy in modern entertainment is important because it does profoundly shape the popular perception of history even if it is meant only as entertainment, and historic falsehoods and misconceptions that gained widespread circulation even for largely innocent reasons still has serious real life consequences.

The important word is 'entertainment'. People aren't generally watching for a history lesson; they are watching to be entertained.

they may not watch it to learn history. but their conception of what the past was like is nonetheless shaped at least as strongly by what they see in these entertainments as it is by occasions where they do actually resign themselves to actually learning.

Talking about the historical accuracy and the news that the TV show MASH is celebrating its 50th anniversary, I remembered reading a long time ago trivia about the show and how they had written out the black surgeon, Spearchucker, already in season one because of "historical accuracy" that no black surgeons served during the Korean War. I thought "wow, was that really necessary?"
And doing some research now, it seems that there were some black surgeons (at least one) serving in Korea, so it wouldn't have been historically inaccurate.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

If there were black surgeons but the number is tiny, introducing a regular character still creates an inaccurate impression of how well integrated the services were in the era.

Mass entertainment should not pretend it is qualified to hide behind the aegis of art. Art supposes discernment on the part of the audience. Mass entertainment relies on the lack of discernment on the part of the audience.

Some people like to be entertained. They aren't as anal as you are.
