Yellow alert: warning USA in danger
#61
RE: Yellow alert: warning USA in danger
I still can't get past the:

Quote:Evil = = adjective

part in profile/header of Eclectic's posts. Anyone got a clue what that means?

Not really a quote since you left out a whole word.

Misquoting is against the rules.  Are you afraid to type out 'Satan'?

And if you want to know what Eclectic means, ask him/her/them.

If we're talking about the signature, I'd think this part would be self-explanatory:
Quote:Satan = Evil = = adjective = means a very bad and harmful thing.

It's easily the most coherent thing I've read from Eclectic.

I was aware that misquoting was against the rules. Are you telling me that posting a truncated sentence from someone else, and saying I don't understand this "part" (I labelled it as a part) is considering misquoting/plagiarism here? If so, I think I might be in the wrong place.

If you 'quote' someone and make a change to that 'quote' you need to note that you have alterred it.

It's that simple.

You seem quite up on the rules as that's one that people usually don't run afoul of.

I made it shorter (truncated it). I made no changes inside the slice I quoted. Could you please be clear if what I did is actually a violation of the rules?

eta: I also indicated that it was a "part", not the whole.

Truncating is an alteration of the original.

Read the rules again.

I think the rules need to be updated to reflect the actual policy as you have described it to me. I made sure to read the rules before my first post as I didn't want to break any rules.

The rules say:
"Quoting other members of the forum inaccurately is against the rules. Any changes in the format of a quote must be called out by the poster with a note (i.e. "bold mine"). "

I made no format change.
Nothing I said was inaccurate (I think).
I noted that what I posted was a part.

eta:
Can you please answer my question: did I break the rules on that post in question? Like if someone posts a book, do I have to quote the whole book? It seems from the rules that quoting a slice would be OK, so long as it was noted (which I did)...I'm so confused.

RE: Yellow alert: warning USA in danger
Your 'quote' was not a quote. You paraphrased without indicating you had done so.

You didn't even get a warning. Just pointed out that you broke a rule.

It's a little too soon for you to tell us how to run the forum.

Slow your roll.
