My hundreds of Mormon relatives would be very surprised to learn they are not Christians.

Not as surprised as Adolf Hitler to learn he's now a Mormon.

It's a colloquialism. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Mormons are Christians per the definition provided. Feel free to ask them the following phrased question:

"When Mormons are talking to other Mormons -- what do they mean when they refer to somebody as a Christian?" (i.e. our new neighbor Bob is a Christian)

Colloquialisms take priority over dictionaries within the Mormon community.

Elon Musk was born in Africa -- does that make him an African American?
Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yes, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our God forever. Behold, who can glory too much in the Lord? Yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards to children of men? Behold, I say unto you, I cannot say the smallest part which I feel. 🙏

Elon Musk is a naturalized American and is therefore an American.  Full stop.

Nice to learn that Mormons make up their own language as well as their own 'religion'.

Hey look everyone, Mormons aren't monsters.  They changed their minds about taking a legal stand against LGBTQ, though not their moral stand.  They're far less likely to murder weary Arkansas travelers now.

No, that term has a specific historical context that doesn't apply to Elon (he's not a descendent of the slaves brought to the North American continent)
