Pondering a question about religion. Given many Christian religions' focus on confession and shared belief, as well as things like shunning, I'm wondering if one of the primary impetuses toward religion is that of managing social relationships. The question would then become how that function originates, grows, and sustains itself if it is the primary thing driving religion, which it may not be. I have to think about the castes in India and how Hinduism underwrote a vast system of social inequalities. It brings to mind Churchill's phrase about "the river of production." Perhaps, in line with the social cohesion concept, religion is more about forming stable and powerful social arrangements and organizations than it is about truth, or serving the personal interests of its members.

Anyway, I'm supposed to be thinking about truth and questions surrounding it in our "post-truth" world, so maybe I'll just set this on the back burner to simmer.

Heh, back in the '90s when my spawn were small, my wife was set to go somewhere for the weekend. When my eldest son found out (about age 5), he cried out, "We'll starve!". How he never noticed how many times I had prepared and fed them meals (and did laundry, etc.), is beyond me. But I understand you are in a different place, and I sympathize.
