One of the common reasons given is that there were 13 people at the Last Supper, and Judas Iscariot was the last (or thirteenth) to be seated.
In some cultures 13 is considered a lucky number. People are funny.

Someone who is clumsy or unskilled is referred to as 'inept'. Why don't we refer to people who are deft and skilled as 'ept'?
