A Three year old release of an enterprise OS? Yeah, there's going to be issues with Wine because an enterprise OS has little use for Windoze compatibility. Did you ever try an actual desktop distro? Or, did you just give it up as "too hard" when the wrong type of software didn't do what you wanted it to?

If you're really fixated on Red Hat, Fedora (you know, the desktop version) may work for you. Really, any desktop version of any Debian based OS (or desktop versions of any Arch based distros) would probably work for you, if you're willing to put in a bit of work for the rewards Linux can grant. But, I'm guessing that "bit of work" will rule you out. You seem to be allergic to it.

Seriously though, it really exposes your deep ignorance when you keep insisting something doesn't work to someone who has it properly working.

I tried installing Ubuntu on my laptop (Acer Nitro 5), but it Kernel Panicked when I told it to format my hard-drive. Oracle Linux worked, it only logged a bunch of ACPI errors.

So, you quit at the first hurdle?

Studying computer science is difficult enough. Studying it using a Linux computer makes it even more difficult.

Seem to me you think studying is difficult and you can't be arsed. Learning will always provide benefit. Do you really think you can be successful in a a field where *nix is prevalent, even dominant (depending on the specialization) without learning it?

And what do you think about the Microsoft C++ Compiler? It can produce programs for Linux (cross-compilation), but it cannot run on Linux. I think it is by far the best C++ compiler. It includes checks in your code so that the program warns you in case you are triggering undefined behaviour. In my AEC-to-WebAssembly compiler, I unintentionally triggered undefined behaviour a few times, but CLANG and GCC didn't warn me about it.

I have installed linux on several vintage laptops, desktops and an old imac, never had any problems at all, not sure what you are doing, but you must be doing it wrong!

Acer Nitro 5 ships with a buggy BIOS. That's why Ubuntu kernel panics when it's supposed to format the disk and why Oracle Linux logs a ton of ACPI errors. It's possible to update the BIOS, but only on Windows.

I've never seen a BIOS that didn't have an updater available that runs at boot. Doesn't mean there isn't one...

There's probably one for your BIOS as well. Of course, that means making a bootable USB, and that's probably outside your skillset.

I've got Debian running on a brand new custom build gaming rig as well as (eta) various flavors on several old and older laptops.

It's definitely user error on his part. Blaming the BIOS is a symptom of that.
