I've met Hebrew scholars who were heavily influenced by silly traditions as well as Christians scholars who believe the Bible says the soul is mortal Ezekiel 18:4; Matthew 10:28. Scholars are idiots too. Religious scholars school in tradition, not facts. There is a difference between theology and Biblical study. Put simply (watch @Bucky Ball) theology is what the Bible might mean and Biblical is what the Bible actually says.

They were biblical scholars not theologians. Theologians tend to go with Genesis being a tribal origin myth, poetry or a the such like.
The bible doesn't say anything without interpretation.

But it doesn't matter. Both the bible and theology are false.
