"Wherefore if forgers of money and other evil-doers are forthwith condemned to death by the secular authority, much more reason is there for heretics, as soon as they are convicted of heresy, to be not only excommunicated but even put to death." -- St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica (Secunda Secundae Partis,11,3)

RE: The religion of peace
^You could escape execution in most of the Middle Ages by learning Latin - being able to read the Bible was taken as evidence that you were at the very least a lay cleric. Clerics had to be tried in ecclesiastical courts, which did not have the power to sentence someone to be executed. You could be flogged, tortured, banished, excommunicated, or be declared an outlaw…but not executed.

‘But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods or no gods. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.’ - Thomas Jefferson

The saint thought the Romans didn’t fully earn the reputation of “making a desert and calling it peace”.    So he thought the worshipers of the lamb of god, armed with his power, should do better.
