The couples themselves who willingly, voluntarily, get married - it's literally what they say in their own vows.

Not if they don't have that in the vows. You know you can write your own.

Religious marriages have a higher divorce rate than those of atheists.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I didn't exchange vows with my partner. We made a blood pact over a sacrificial goat. *sniff* I get misty thinking about it, such a beautiful ceremony

The traditional marriage vow as an institution is a badly obsolete joke out of touch with progress and reality, and being pushed mainly by religions whose future is dim unless progress is halted and turned back to the level of Iron Age.

Not to mention - if you treat it as a verbal contract, if one party breaks the vows, why would the other party still be bound? My first spouse was abusive and controlling and uninterested in doing otherwise. I didn't sign up for that shit.

That was an option? I didn't have to toss both of our firstborn into a volcano? I feel kinda silly now tbh.
