So, I take it you’re in Camp Tedesco.

The first sub-Saharan pope would be a strong move - as the church increasingly shifts to Africa and the Middle East/China and declines in the West, signaling a will to move in that direction would be a potentially massive PR tool in expanding the faith in oppressed communities; additionally Sarah has been on the frontlines of dealing with groups like ISIS-DRC and is well aware of the threats they pose.

I guess I won't hold my breath, but would love to see him advocate for the reestablishment of military orders to protect Christians both in the Islamic/atheist world and in the West as well.

At the end of the day, who has the slightest clue what the politics of the Vatican will leave us with.

Such a move (while I'm sure would give you tingles in your trousies) would lead to the widespread persecution of Christians. How can you not grasp that?

One of the cardinals in the running is Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

His real name sounds more made up than the cardinals I came up with (Sans Köfte who is very real and half meatball)
"For the only way to eternal glory is a life lived in service of our Lord, FSM; Verily it is FSM who is the perfect being the name higher than all names, king of all kings and will bestow upon us all, one day, The great reclaiming"  -The Prophet Boiardi-

"Arming individuals facing persecution and providing them the means to defend themselves will only increase the persecution they face."

An interesting hypothesis, seems pretty contrary to current global politics.

But the military orders did NOT historically protect Christians. They protected Catholics and persecuted everyone else.

For whatever it's worth I put this in the humor section as it was just a goofy notion.

Not sure why Marty made it so serious

Hear me out

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I was also surprised by that, given his delightfully mischievous sense of humour.*
