I'm only sane when it serves my purposes.

My psychiatrist reckons I'm paranoid.
He hasn't actually said that, but I know the bastard is thinking it.

I only act sane when it suits my purposes. If they decided I was crazy they'd ship me off to the Gulf in a heartbeat.

Interesting, I was actually most depressed when I was still a believer, too. Religion certainly wasn't the only factor in my case, it wasn't even the biggest factor, but it did exacerbate things a lot. I felt so guilty, thinking I was a horrible sinner, that God was punishing me and making me suffer, that dying and going to heaven would be SO much better than living like this. Very unhelpful thoughts.
I've definitely been 'insane,' 'crazy,' whatever you want to call it, though mental illness is the preferred term. I've been a serious danger to myself. I've been unable to function. I've had thoughts that border on delusional.
It's hard to define 'sane'... I'd say I'm relatively mentally healthy now. None of the above happens anymore. I can respect myself (and others), I can be happy, I can deal with stress, I can accept the world as it is, I can have hope for the future... that's what mental health/sanity means to me.

The "revelation" I had that drove me away from Christianity was science. I looked at the stuff for myself and saw how much of it is either skewed or portrayed as lies by the christian community.

That's similar to what I felt.
1. I was born against my will, and forced to either obey the will of some tyrannical cunt in the sky or burn in the fires of hell forever
2. God is a douchebag. Even as a believer I thought that. I didn't enjoy serving him at all, and am glad I have discontinued it.
3. According to the Bible, I'm a terrible person that absolutely cannot live a proper life without christianity dictating my actions, and because I'm so bad god himself had to allow his son to be killed as a sacrifice for my sins. That sucks.
4. Heaven always has sounded like a shitty place. Basically I'm supposed to spend my whole life worshipping god and doing his will, so that then I can go to heaven...and do the same thing. Forever. WTF? Nothing, at all, is awesome enough to partake in forever. Heaven would only be awesome if it was an endless supply of sex, video games, explosives, and other good times. Even then, I'd want to be able to /quit when I got bored of it.
5. God is a maniacal murdering sack of garbage.

In response to the OP, I don't know that I am sane. Society judges me as sane /insane, based on an objective view. I have a few really blunt trusted friends and my wife that I can ask anything and get their perspective. That's my checks and balance. I'm introspective enough to take gradual slight changes with a grain of salt, but still notice major shifts and use my "panel then". I also factor in a self judgement based off the range of people I observe (ie. I'm not nearly as bat-shit crazy as that guy or that is the most grounded person I've ever met). I usually fale somewhere inbetween, but closer to the side of rational and grounded in my circles.

Thanks Kaptinjoo. Seems a million miles away from Christianity.. but I do believe that is very common. Sad.

I don't know how you can believe the Bible and not believe the statements I made... unless you take the view that some random pieces are not to be meant literally and all this sort of thing. IMO you can either take it literally or leave it. If you have to pick parts out and claim they are not to be meant literally (except obvious things like the parables that straight up say they are non-literal examples), why believe it?

And there you separate from what the text actually says and what so called literalists would have us believe. There are no statements of material creation from nothing in Genesis 1, for example, but those people you listen to who bend over backwards to make a material interpretation work would have you think so.
Back at you... why would you believe something that is so obviously incorrect? Why not question it yourself and find out what it really means?
