Oh, another question. Why is it that they always have to dress up in the white shirt, black tie, black pants when they ride bicycles door-to-door?

Saw some1 say that the most devout/fundamentalist will never completely take it off.

It protects against sin/satan? How?

These are referred to as "sacred temple garments." I never wore these because I didn't make it this far in my 12 year reign.

In order to wear these, you must fulfill the ordinance of the endowment ceremony. This is the ceremony with the washing an anointing, you wear special clothing that is white and the men wear this cap that looks like a bakers hat, you watch a movie about Adam and Eve, then you learn the tokens which are handshakes and password to go along with each of them that you have to do with a man behind a sheet that you can't see that is playing the part of God. Also, you are given a password that you have to say before crossing the veil. This represents the password that you must give to god along with the tokens before you can get into the celestial kingdom that they believe will happen someday in another realm. After you cross the sheet you get to sit in the celestial room until you are ready to leave that I believe is all white and represents heaven.

A current Mormon will never disclose the details of the ceremony because it is a sacred ceremony which must not be talked about. Before 1990 you used to have to make blood oaths to not disclose the secrets by the penalties of having your throat slit and you bowels removed. This was removed from the ceremony in 1990 because of how strange and masonic it all was.

The clothing you wear only in the temple but you must wear the special undergarments at all times except for showering and swimming as a reminder of the commitment that you made with god. The way it protects against sin is the symbolism of it all. On lds.org to order the temple garments you have to have a code that they give you after you attend the ceremony in order to buy them because they only want those worthy to be wearing them.

So bascially that is the idea behind the garments. It is not much different than a wedding ring really. It is just clothing to remind them of their committment they made to god.

By the way I once had a girlfriend who converted to mormonism while I was dating her.

I wasn't meaning it was wrong, but more or less I would encourage someone to look beyond that episode to find out more about the church other than just citing South Park when discussing it. When somone is making fun of the church I can usually tell if someone did their research or is just citing South Park.

However, the parts of the episode that weren't accurate were that they said he never showed the plates to anyone but in The Book of Mormon you'll see in the first few pages the testimonies of witnesses in his family who claimed to have seen the plates.

Also, The Book of Mormon doesn't say that Adam and Eve lived in Jackson County, MO like Stan mentions. It was in one of the sermons or teachings of Joseph Smith.

The reason Mormons don't take that episode seriously is because on South Park you are given the story in a satire format that has information that most Mormons don't know about. For example, I didn't know the part about translating from a hat until after I left the church. The church also doesn't teach the lost book of Lehi in any of its approved sources.

The church sanatizes its history to make it less contradictory, which is why it is easy to convince a dumb Christian to join just because it feels good.

Because Joseph Smith said it was and he was a prophet, so it must be true.

They have bicycles in more metro and warmer climate areas. I live in SC and they ride bikes here but in Ohio they all had cars.

They have white shirts and black pants, but they don't seem to all have black ties. I think they are a little more lenient on the tie.

I just didn't fulfill the ordinance. The garments you don't get to wear until your endowments and I believe you have to be 18, I might be wrong about that. I know 12 year olds can only do as much as baptisms for the dead which I did.

To be able to do temple work you have to get a recommend from the bishop where you have interview in which you are asked questions to make sure you life style meets the church standard. The first question you are asked is if you accept The Bible, The Book of Mormon, D&C, and the POGP as the word of God and if you say no the interview is over and you don't get the recommend.

Further questions ask things like if you obey the law of chastity. Which means no sex outside of marriage, no pornography, and no masturbating.

This recommend folds up into the size of a credit card and now has a barcode which the bishop scans and puts your information into the computer and is good for six months I think. It will get you into any temple worldwide.

All the employees of the church are required to hold one of these during their employment and if they don't pass an interview after their recommend expires they are terminated on the spot. One employee who was gay but didn't date other men (you can be gay in the church as long as you don't give into your gay temptations from satan) was asked if he still had friends that were gay and he said yes. The stake president told him this violated the code saying you must not associate or particpate in groups that conflict with church teachings. Since he wasn't willing to abandon his gay friends he didn't get a recommend and lost his job.
