Is religion a force for good in the world?

Is religion a force for good in the world?
Regardless of whether it's true or not, is religion beneficial in general to the human race, would we be worse off without it? I'm inclined to say the world would be a better place without religion, but any arguments contrary are welcome!

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn't understand the assignment. I told them they didn't understand life.

No. It's like a virus that poisons the mind and infects its host in such a way as to propagate itself further!!

Generally speaking, religion is not good for the world, in my opinion. However, I think it is good for some individuals.

This question is quite pointless, considering that most likely religion will still be for a very long time. You won't live to see it.

The return of your Jesus is also estimated by many of the likes of you to be a very long time off, yet you seem to somehow see point in typing "christian" in your religious affliation.

He's a long way from proving that his 'jesus' was ever here the first time, too.

Totally agree with this, religion seems to be good with some individuals, but I think collectively it holds us back.

This is the stupidest thing I've heard in awhile. Substitute 'cancer' or 'slavery' for the word religion, and you'll see why. We probably won't live to see something, therefore let's not bother trying to bring it about. Bravo
