Just because you're an atheist (or some other brand of freethinker) doesn't mean your rational. It just means you don't have a specific irrational belief.

As for the issue, it may help to do some substitution and see how it works

I'd be fine with living on any of these streets and wouldn't feel as if someone were forcing religion on me.

It might represent being sick and tired of religion and religious language permeating every hour of the day... and having everyone else make assumptions about what you may or may not believe. I for one, am sick of having to keep my thoughts about religion to myself in "polite society". It's called oppression and it is not surprising that atheists (especially here in the U.S.) are fed up with it.

Some New York City atheists are upset with the use of the "H" word. They're offended with the city using the word "Heaven" on a street sign and they're planning to file a lawsuit.

shit just gets old afterwhile. what about the other people if there are any, who must live on that street? maybe they didn't sign up for that. so great, if they want to make a memorial, why not put a placard on a building - perhaps the firehouse itself. is there no better way to address the good people we lost in 9/11?

can it be looked past as an issue worth a fight? of course, since you can still refer to that street as it's original name, Richards St. same as naming 6th st in nyc, the "avenue of the americas".
