Ummm, so we existed before we were born? Didn't think so.

Quote:I hold the hope for an afterlife because I cannot deal/grasp the concept of not existing. Ideally I would be in a happy place surrounded by loved ones. The thought of losing them or not being able to interact with them is upsetting.
Reality isn't about what we want it to be. It is the way it is, we cannot change it. Reality can be wonderful and upsetting. If I knew there was a lovely life after death where loved ones go, I'd never feel upset when loved ones die. However, in this reality, when they die, I'm very certain that I'll never see or speak to them again. For all eternity we'll be apart. It hurts, but I still want to see reality for what it is. I don't want some blind fold or blanky to make everything seem nicer.
It's that all important question: If you had cancer, would you want the doctor to lie to you and say you're fine or tell you the truth?

Quote:Well its not just that. Its the fact I cannot grasp non existance. How can you fathom not existing, if all we know is existance? Either way however many billion people have already gone through it so I guess we are all in the same boat regardless, and we can't stop it from happening.
Around 900 billion are dead. We will join them at some point.
To grasp non-existence is to not feel or think at all. Much like being asleep, except no dreaming and no waking up. Not too hard to imagine. Tongue
Not scary being dead, you won't even know that you're dead.

Quote:As someone else mentioned, being immortal does actually sound like quite a good idea Smile
I like the idea, I really do. To go on with loved ones where there is no crime or war, no disease, pain, anger or regret. No yobs, murderers or rapists. But I've got to be realistic. Just because it sounds nice, doesn't mean it's true. "Just because poison tastes good, doesn't mean you should drink it".
"If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is".

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Welcome. Very interesting story, I'm shocked neither religion weighed in on you, good to hear that you choose for yourself. If you have any Christian questions and you're actually seeking an answer Biblically, let me know.

Hey Tesla, welcome to AF! ^_^
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Wow your background sounds identical to mine and your beliefs are similar.

........... have you ever heard of Deism? I think you'd like it.

I havent heard of deism, what is the concept surrounding it? I will have to have a read into it. I still find however now there are certain things I perceive as wrong even though there was a freedom growing up. I still see things such as alcohol and eating pork as something I can do, but something I shouldn't do.... When I do (especially when I drink) I do feel guilty without knowing why.

Deism is practically identical to atheistism except through the same adherance to science and observation of nature & the Universe we reach a different conclusion and feel that there is enough evidence to believe in God.

What God is, is something that has to come from you but we essentially believe that the Universe works in such a way that something does not come from nothing.

Whether it's the behaviour of the seemingly pre programmed elements and atoms or if you believe in the Big Bang your thoughts must be on how the primeval atom came into existance ...... for more info I would search Deism under google, I wouldn't pay to much mind to the wiki version though.

Desim is at least 200 years old and developed when free thinkers began questioning the bible as they saw the conflict with science, some of the founding fathers of America were Deists .... do a search on famous Deists.

Alternatively you can PM me.

RE: hi all
Tesla, this explains the other thread you made. Your upbringing has left you with a residue of guilt when you do things like drink alcohol and eat pork (!). If you want to be taken seriously, why don't you actually think about the reasons you were told those things were bad, and weigh them up. Pork is delicious.

And welcome to the forums. Also beware of Deism, it's slightly more credible than Theism because it doesn't have a God who intervenes in human affairs, but it's still absurdly unsupported by evidence. It's just the argument from incredulity basically.

Bacon.

That is all.

(If you want Tesla, I can run a clinic on how to drink and eat pork at the same time without feeling guilt. Ask the folks that join hangouts I'm in. I have a lot of practice.)
