RE: Why...
I'm an atheist with regards to every god ever described by man. Could there be some here-to-fore undescribed and possible god, sure why not (i think it would be a stretch to call it god if it did exist). But we don't have any evidence for such a thing, and so I feel that it is pointless to speculate upon until such time as either evidence, or the need to posit such a deity arises.

In short, "that which we call a rose" doesn't directly apply to deity.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

RE: Why...
I've always found the term 'agnostic' to muddle the issue, it's pretty unnecessary. And kind of annoying, because questions like this one get asked which mean I have to define myself either way. If you say you're an agnostic atheist, you get 'AHA, so you don't know', and if you say you're a gnostic atheist (which if pushed is where I would have to lean) then they say 'But how can you KNOW for sure there is no God', and then I have to fall over myself trying to explain that I KNOW there is no God to the same extent that I know unicorns et al do not exist. There has never been any credible evidence of either, but nobody gets grilled on other fantastical myths.

So yeah, agnostic is a fairly useless term.

Which part do you need help with? I rewrote that post about four times, it's a pain trying to explain what I'm getting at.

... why not be an agnostic as to whether Elvis is 'really' dead?

I guess it is because there is no convincing evidence that Elvis is still alive, nor sound argument. On the other hand there is plenty of evidence and also sound arguments that he is dead. These when taken together can only be defended against by Elivislivesists by creating a mythical superElvis with extraordinary Contradictory powers, so far from human experience as to render the mythical superElvis a meaningless invention of the human mind.

I heard the same argument from my mom, "You're not Atheist, you're agnostic, because you don't know if god exists!"

Worst argument I've ever gotten into :p
