Gutted about Andy Whitfield. He was perfect for the role IMO.
I prefer the book by Lewis Grassic Gibbon.

At least when Crassus crassly starts an ill conceived war against Parthia, he had the good grace to personally take the field and get wacked, thus compensating the republic he defrauded by ridding it of himself.
