The government in Australia does have a modicum of control over "Private Enterprise" and so YES the govt policies of the day CAN have "control" over this issue

how has that worked out for them?

Frustrating as the "Unions" have 'Work-safe'd' or priced our workforce out of jobs. Sad

And don't talk to me about "Profits" being the "New Evil"of corporations. Mankind has NEVER done ANYTHING if there was NOT a Profit for him/Her in it.

Spare me the sanctimonious bullshit. Angry

When welfare makes up 35% of the U.S.A.'s total wages, 10% of the population is on unemployment & 14% of the population is on food stamps, it's very much the government's problem.

Corporations MADE THIS MESS. Why would they want to fix it?

Sounds like your friends are either young & dumb, drinking the neocon-ade or both.

Yes...along with padraic and Tristo...a few others on this forum too. It is why i don't get into the American or UK Political systems and critique as I am not up on just what it is like over there.

Why??

Strange...Many of the founding fathers of science did many things which had no immediate profit. Mathematicians who discovered formulas and equations for which they had no idea what to use them for at the time, but are now used widely by computers hundreds of years after their deaths. I know that I have, on many occasions, done work for free, and gave people money for free, with no strings attached. Many people on this planet have done such things, such as habitat for humanity, where people come together and build houses for poor people for free. I currently run my labor unions credit union completely wage free. I dont make a single penny, yet I do the same work of any other chairman on a banking board. Many religious organizations of different types and beliefs have done many things fors people for absolutely free, especially the budhists.

...and that is just right off the top of my head. So you were saying "Mankind has NEVER done ANYTHING if there was NOT a Profit for him/Her in it"?!?!

Actually, I'm not suggesting any new tax systems but merely a benchmark for determining if the distribution of the burden of running a community is fairly assessed to all groups. Since the top 1% owns 1/3 of the nation's wealth, they should be paying 33% of the nation's tax income to maintain the nation.

As if that justifies selling ANYTHING to people who cannot pay for them while conning them into thinking they can.

Here again we see the effect of religious thinking. The Invisible Hand of the Free Market, blessings be upon its name, is perfect. If the system failed, it must be the fault of government interference. It couldn't be the fault of the system, which is perfect. The Devil is always to blame. Looks like some foolish "do gooder" liberals tried to help those scummy poor people again who are too lazy to do anything for themselves.

Who said the "profit" was only $$$$ ?

Sorry if my statement made you make that assumption
