What IS America?

Because the continent is North America, not America. The USA as a whole is America.
If you want to get technical the continents (south and north) are collectively known as the Americas, not America. United states of AMERICA 
In english, maybe. We still call the continent as a whole "Amerika", because it'd be too awkward to call it in it's plural, "Amerikalar", which makes as much sense as calling Europe "Europes" or Asia "Asias" and etc.
