The sudden appearance of a plethora of new life forms during the Cambrian explosion has provided fodder for creationists for years. Questions such as where are the transitional fossils, and how did these forms appear so suddenly have their roots in the scarcity of diverse animal life prior to the Cambrian. The sad thing is that most creationists don’t even know the Precambrian is what they are talking about when they mention such arguments.
Over the last couple of decades molecular paleobiology has provided important clues to the answers for these questions. An interesting article was published in Science a few days ago on the subject. In it Paleontologist Kevin Peterson talks about the evidence which supports the 200 million years of evolution that took place before the Cambrian explosion. Surprise, surprise it’s in the DNA.
