Has anyone here ever....

RE: Has anyone here ever....
I haven't had to do that, but I have considered putting some other book on top of the Bible before I swear, ideally something like The Brothers Karamazov, The Catcher in the Rye, or The Phantom Tollbooth. Maybe even my copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I once gave evidence for The Crown as 'an expert witness'. I declined to take the oath, making an affirmation instead. (just as binding under Australian law)

Some of the smaller Christian sects, Such as JW's I think, also refuse to swear on the Bible. Tacky might know.

Yes. Both options were presented. I don't know about a big generalized speech. They just asked if you would swear or affirm to discharge the duties of juror. Any answer which included either word was apparently acceptable.

Witnesses were given the same choice.

@padriac, IDK, I know I wouldn't swear on it. I just think it's the oddest practice.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

It kinda makes sense in a court of law. The Hebrew god, as well as Allah from what I understand, is quite the lawyer. Precise rules complete with loopholes and an artful dodge of the "death penalty" that even a brutal serial killer can make use of. Ironic too. The ultimate injustice is used as a standard for courts all over the world.

Naw - I'd say that swearing in with a hand on the Bible fits just about perfect considering that many courtrooms around the globe still prejudice their decisions based on their particular religion.
