8 actually wasn't that bad. I hated it at first, until I got used to it. I didn't have any have problems with it. I downloaded 10 yesterday and it went off without a hitch. No problem. Just gotta get used to 10, now.

I've been wondering about updating myself. I bought Windows 7 instead of Windows 8. I did have a go with Windows 8 on my brother's new laptop and absolutely hated it. I would prefer to keep Windows 7 is 10 tries to shoehorn you into the Windows 8 method of using it. But reports seem to suggest that it's OK. At least there's a start menu.
It's not the appearance that matters to be as much as much where to find everything. I use KDE on Linux but never liked Gnome, which was a shame.
Another problem I have is dual booting with UEFI with Windows on the first hard disk and Linux on the second. Reinstalling Linux used to be a breeze but last time I ended up wiping over the hard disk. I wouldn't want the upgrade to Windows 10 to mess that up!
I'm going to have to make a lot of backups before I proceed.

My download to 10 went off pretty easy. I had GIMP and Libre Office on my Windows 8 and I didn't lose either of them with my upgrade to 10. Both are up and running perfectly.

I have Windows 8.1 loaded onto my computer, and have signed up for Windows 10. Still waiting for it though. My question is... Because I bought this laptop with Windows 8 installed, I didn't get a disc with the OS. So when they finally roll out W10 to me, I take it I'll have to install it over 8.1, and can't do a clean install?

I've been reading some early reviews of Windows10, and the general consensus seems to be that it holds a LOT of promise for the seemingly insurmountable task of making Bill Gates even richer than he already is.

You kidding, gnome 2 was an amazing desktop. But now I suppose KDE is the best choice.

It looked like it could be good but I hate desktops or user interfaces where I have to learn how to select things. Like spending several minutes looking before finally spotting a small icon for a wrench that turns out to be the settings in google chrome for example. I like to navigate to whatever I want to select. To be honest, that's probably my only requirement from a user interface. That and I don't want to spend any time relearning something new for the sake of it when I could be productive instead. I'm actually happiest when I'm using vim and Gnu screen on the command line. I try to stay away from IDEs. But if I have to use a windows manager then KDE is the least different.

Yep. It's a devious little feature called Windows Update Delivery Optimization. It's enabled by default. For Enterprise and Education users, it operates over the local LAN. For ordinary Home type users, Microsoft can send their data update goodies to potentially any PC on the global Internet -- from your PC, over your Internet connection. On your dime.
We could get into the pros and cons of local updates being staged between local machines on a LAN as opposed to the outside Internet.
Someone with a load more of technical expertise than I will need to weigh in on this.
Apparently it can be shut off.... but that doesn't make it pass the smell test.

Sounds like it's using bittorrent.
This is nothing new, a lot of popular software uses bittorrent to distribute updates. This has been done for many years.
It's a non-issue for me. There's no perceivable impact on my network connection seeding a popular torrent, and this wouldn't be any different, except that there's a fuckton more nodes and therefore a negligabe impact on any one of them.
It's simple the singularly.most efficient way to distribute updates to the most people in the fastest time.
