Dude.

Please stop living up to this media-imposed portrayal of men who give non-zero fucks about feminism in gaming.  No matter how many times you say this, it's not going to get you laid.  Just saying. Big Grin

Then there's just the over-reactions, like "omg that male protagonist just killed a woman!" ... as if he hasn't just killed 100 men before. There are 500 male deaths in video games to every 1 female. I also cringe a bit at the "fat acceptance" brigade pushing for "more realistic" (that means fat, btw) female characters. I get wanting more modest/practical clothing and more realitically proportioned bodies, but an outright fat Lara Croft makes absolutely no sense in the context of what she's usually doing (very athletic stuff, that's a major part of her character). Having an athletic build makes sense for most video game characters (male as well, not just female). Getting upset that a female character that runs, jumps and climbs everywhere is "too thin" is well, very silly.

Oh, there's definitely a really vocal minority that freaks out about every perceived slight, no matter how ridiculous.  As a comic book fan, I visit Scans Daily regularly because I'm a cheap bastard.  That place was founded by, and is currently inundated by people who legitimately think that the bulk of reality should come with a trigger warning.  They're ridiculous people.

And, no doubt gaming has its fill of people like that.  But, there's this weird visceral reaction by a lot of  gamers when it comes to them.  It's not just that they have a difference of opinion, but because a lot of mainstream gamers perceive the overly sensitive types as a threat, they launch preemptive doxxing campaigns against them, and say a whole bunch of heinous shit, including violent threats, against them which is just crazy.

Someone like Sarkeesian doesn't deserve to be threatened with rape and death because she has a different opinion about video games.  And, really, the only reason why she became a minor celebrity at all was because people freaked the fuck out over what she had to say which gave her undue attention. Good job there, people.

Moreover, her analysis is the classical Marxist deconstruction of mass media.  They teach you that shit in mass media 101.  I had a couple of classes that went over the same exact stuff (albeit with TV and movies and advertising) when I was getting my degree in communication.  What she's saying is literally nothing different than scores of other critics have said about literature, radio, film, TV, and advertising in all those mediums.  Yet, I have never seen scores of angry movie goers threaten to rape and/or kill Richard Roper for his reviews, for example.  And if games are going to be treated as art, then they're going to be critiqued like art, especially since they're an amalgam of other art (writing, music, visuals).

So, tldr; yes, some people are over sensitive gibbering idiots.  They deserve to have their outlook challenged, but they don't deserve to be silenced or harmed.

I think "wtf ru mad, bro?" is the appropriate (and infuriating) response.

Doesn't bother me. I don't play FPS all that much, but what I have given the chance I enjoyed. It's really no different than the old school 2D side-scroll beat 'em ups which was basically going from Point A to B beating up all the enemies on screen, and then going to the next screen to beat up all the enemies that appear on there. It's nothing new.

Yup! So far I like and have played Painkiller and Serious Sam series. Can you recommend other games like Painkiller? Violence games where your only task is to kill anything that stands in your way? Preferably with good graphics, gore and hordes of enemies just like in Painkiller.
Soldier of Fortune 2007 has quite a decent gore but the enemies are not as many as I'd like them to be and on some missions it becomes way too boring.

Grezzo 2. It's a mod of Doom 2 made by an italian dude. It's completely fucking nuts, and if you don't get the references to Italian pop culture and politics it's probably the closest you'll ever get to the experience of being abducted by aliens. You have to kill Jesus on the first level.

It's worth the experience I swear
"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.

Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.

Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.

Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.

Vote "yes" on Proposition 1321. Think of some kids. Some kids."

Sounds nice. If not for anything else, I'll try that mod only for killing Jesus. Big Grin

I play Defense of the Ancients.

Quote:DotA is largely attributed to being the most significant inspiration for the multiplayer online battle arena genre

You might have heard of one of it's spawn-off's, like LOL and Dota2.

I play it since the old days - when plain old DotA was all there was. And it's incredibly immersing. I recommend you take it up. Play Dota2 though, if you decide on trying it out. I won't(play that travesty) because I'm a veteran and can't do such an appaling thing, but for the newbie it's the better choice - especially since so few people actually play DotA("1") nowadays. It's also technically better in every way, or so I hear.

The more sex, explicit language and gut-wrenching violence and gore the better. Some of my most favorite games are also the most violent.

I guess that could be deemed as "edgy" of me but that's just what I like.
