I think it's likely a safe, canned response; carefully devised by PR types, in order to address the anti-gay controversy surrounding the church they attend... without revealing any conviction regarding the issue, either way. The network probably insisted on it.

I'm certain they'd like to keep the gravy train a rollin'. So, they went with it.
