It can hurt if tugged on hard, or if it gets caught in something.  I'm not sure what you'd consider weird.  You can definitely feel it's there once it gets long enough, but I'm not sure if that's weird.  It does get itchy/scratchy as it grows, though, which can get annoying.

uhh.... They have distorted body image and want to compensate for their perceived shortcomings in terms of appearance through art. Or they are catering to the target audience. or they just like how it looks
