I typically wear a short beard of some sort. I don't even notice it. About three days into growing a new beard there'll be some itching, but nothing severe; same for when I go a weekend without shaving my neck.
I shave about once every two weeks, with maybe a trim around the edges in the middle. Cato's right, a couple of days in, it can be a little annoying/itchy. When the hairs are only just poking out, if you look down or turn your head you can scrape yourself a bit. Once it's more than a couple millimeters long, though, it's not very noticeable at all until it nears the one-inch mark. My facial hair is pretty naturally curly, and that's about the point at which it starts to loop, which makes it feel a little matted and can result in tangles and such (ie requires combing!). I didn't really shave in college, just because I never felt like it, but with a steady job I just need to keep it neat.
