I always find that a ludicrous argument. It isn't like prison is deterring anyone, the majority of people coming out of prison reoffend and go right back in again, yet I don't see these people whining that we ought to close the prisons. It's all hypocrisy.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

Approximately 4%... four per cent of inmates who have been put to death have been wrongfully convicted. I implore you to let that number sink in if you're for the death penalty.
Until that number goes down to zero, I am going to be 100% fully against the death penalty except in the case of the convict choosing it.
More than that are imprisoned improperly, are you going to demand that nobody be put in prison until that number is zero, or are you going to be a hypocrite?

If they're imprisoned, there remains the chance of release. If you kill them, the mistake is irreparable, and guess what, the state murdered an innocent person.

I guess, the possibility of ever belonging to these 4 percents doesn't occur to you. Would you run your mouth all the same in that case too?

Doesn't make it wrong either. Your opinion is just your opinion and apparently, it's one that a minority of people share.
Argumentum ad populum is still fallacious reasoning.

So what you're saying is that it doesn't deter the crime, it prevents recidivism. Those are two entirely different things.

Wrongful imprisonment can be at least partially repaired ... wrongful killing, not so much.

While wrongful imprisonment is preferable to wrongful killing, I am skeptical of our ability to repair the damage the wrongful conviction caused. In many cases those poor people have lost their families and homes, which is pretty damn hard to replace. There really isn't any way to compensate those poor people for what was taken from them, and in some cases, for decades.
This is not an argument with your point, I just wonder how well we could possibly compensate anyone for ruining their lives.
I would more generally advocate that one only leave one entrance into their mind(reason), and keep the rest of it rather closed, as it is one hell of a lot easier to shovel shit in than it is to get it out.
If the evidence and reason for you to believe something isn't really any better than the reason you should believe some rural farmer from Arkansas got anally probed by interstellar visitors, then you probably shouldn't.

I'm just quoting back what you said. The fact that you can't recognize that is your problem. Not my fault you're so irrational.
