Maybe you're not doing it right?

Wait, this isn't area 69.  Never mind.

We did when I was a kid. The whole idea was pretty terrifying. I still think teaching children about things like the rapture and hell is extremely cruel if not child abuse.

I was taught about the existence of hell. Never once felt like my parents were abusing me though. But I can see how it can be done in such a way that is absolutely abuse.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

My parents never talked about hell. The priests did. It was the late 60ies and the Catholic church was much more powerful than it is today. In fact, the stories about hell beat the stories about Jesus by a long chalk. They did an excellent job of turning us off and ultimately away from the church.

Yeah that's not cool. I think the part of the world you live in and its culture may have played a role, too. My parents are South Americans born in the 50's and both raised in Catholic homes and went to Catholic school. They didn't get that kind of stuff about Hell like that.

Why? He never said that God, women, men or his horse spoke back; in any language.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

It's not cool, in general. But, it's not just a catholic or christian thing. Hell is an evil thing taught among many religions.

I suppose it's a good way to keep people fearing for their soul in order to stay in that religion. That's why I didn't stop believing at 12, thanks to the fear of hell. Ooohh religion, you are something else..

I remember him laying the smack down on some christians using his incredible knowledge of history. Just like you Min Smile He would make a great mod, if this place needed a non-atheist, but I don't think it's at that of a desperate point here. There are many better atheists candidates here than theists for mods.

It had the opposite effect on me. First, I partitioned, seeing god and Jesus as two different persons. Then I started to question and ultimately, my disbelief got the better of me.

With 40,000 schisms so far, I'd say there has been a SHITLOAD of intramural insulting of Christians by Christians.

Not sure what further outrage atheists could generate at this point.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
