I know, and I understand that, but nevertheless I don't think it's acceptable to ever hit a child. There are other ways of dealing with them, and physical abuse creates more problems than it solves.

You think small children pose no physical threat. My wife was beaten and kicked by our eldest for a while. When he was in "one of those moods" he would lash out uncontrollably generally starting with things then moving onto people, he has a brother two years his junior who due to proximity bore the brunt of it. I'm making him sound like a monster. Honestly he's fine now but for a (short) while we feared for his brothers safety and my wifes sanity. He was about three I think.

Yes. Morons that scream at there partners in public are a good example.

You're not making him sound like a monster. You're making him sound like someone who doesn't understand the natural consequences of his actions. Which I would say is perfectly normal for a 3 year old. But I am not against giving a 3 year old a bit of mandatory alone time when it's best for his safety and the safety of those around him. I think, however, that spanking him would only serve to further confuse him about whether or not violence is an acceptable response to anger.

Hence us shoving him in the garden on the basis that there were fewer expensive things he could smash out there. Shutting him in his bedroom resulted in complete destruction of all his stuff. Naughty step, would that work on a tasmanian? I think not and thats what you have to equate him too at that point. There was no reasoning there was just rage.

It seems like 10% of the non-smacking parents know about other techniques for better behaviour in children.
The rest don't give a fuck about anybody else and neither will their kids.

I'm against physical punishment. I see it as a shortcut in parenting. It only teaches fear.

Agreed. And the soap. And the fact that Quill's bf is arguing for it. This makes me worry that he is actually an abusive bully.

Also be aware that you may end up giving your child fetishes later on in life if you only pay attention to them by disciplining them.

Grey areas are how most things operate. My mum, when I was a kid, put my hand on the ring of the cooker (after it had had time to cool a bit) so that it hurt just enough to show a toddler that it was dangerous. I'd come dangerously close to putting my hand on it when it was full on apparently. Was this abuse or teaching of the danger in the simplest way to a creature with no real reasoning skills? I go with the latter. What I think I'm saying is that interactions and events are complex and these lines in the sand are not always helpful.
