Atheist/Agnostic here, Hello!

(This post was last modified: December 31, 2010 at 5:53 pm by Reese.)
Do believe there is a God? No. Do I believe there may be a God? Sure.
I've been an Atheist/Agnostic since I was 12. I did the whole Polish Catholic thing until that age, and it left me wanting more. Not too surprising.
The goal I have struggled with since then was finding something besides this to believe in. Not an easy task to say the least. Because we should be honest, we all want to believe in something. This is the reason so many people got suckered into God in the first place. They aren't stupid. They just want something to believe in.
It occured to me, that unless there is an alternative, then there is no reason for believers to switch to "non-believers."
Why do you think that the first question that people that believe in God ask us this? Namely being, "What do you believe in then?"
So? What's your answer?

I see. I totally understand both of you. And what I understand is that you don't have answer. That's cool. It's expected. Cheers for the New Year.

Because, as strange as it may sound, many religious people believe in God because they think that God actually exists, not just because "they want something to believe in".

Hey, that's very astute of you. Good job for having "ideas." You, unlike the rest of us, haven't had ideas like everyone else.
Good job. You FTW!
Well, Mr. Stempy, if everyone here has such a great idea of what they believe in, why haven't they voiced it? Whether they think God exists or not is not particularly pertinent.

There's actually quite a lot of expessing of ideologies throughout the site. Feel free to lurk a little before you make such a snap (and unsupported) judgement. As a theist, the first that's not typically the first question I ask. That is usually, "Hi how are you?" or "What's your name" but when it comes down to the first ideological question I ask it would probably be something like, "Why don't you believe in God, the Christian variety or otherwise?"
But anyways.. welcome to the site and happy posting.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

My answer would be is "we are atheist to some extent about non-existence of most of the gods of this world, some of us just go one step further."

I would agree with you fully Stempy. Indeed in my experience I have met many quite intelligent and well thought out people who happen to be theists.
