What do you mean by most people, and how do most people define it?

What I mean by most people is the majority of people on earth.
Most people define God fundamentally as a sentient being who created everything we know. That's agreed upon by muslims Jews and Christians at least.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I already pointed out to you exactly where in the definition of religion you are getting hung up on (or refusing to acknowledge).

"The belief in, AND WORSHIP of..."

If I tell you I believe in Santa, all that constitutes is my personal, internal, private belief. If I tell you I believe in, and WORSHIP Santa, then you can ask me, "how do you worship Santa?"

And I might reply that I pray to him 5 times a day, I recite my "Santa is awesome" chant, I take Tuesdays off in his honor, and I make a yearly trek to the North Pole to pay homage. -THIS- you may call a religion.

My belief alone is not. And same goes for God, because I don't make exceptions for any one type of imaginary friend. If you know one, you know them all.

At this point he's just flailing around with his "I'm right and everyone who disagrees with me is wrong" bullshit. He's a douche nozzle.

Pointing out that you fit a certain label is not exactly speaking for you. It's more of a disagreement concerning what a certain word means.

Plus arrogantly applying labels to people over their objections. It's not that doing so is never justified, but it's rare for it to be justified or worth putting someone on the defensive, even if you were right. In general, I'm happy to use the labels people pick for themselves. If I disagree, that doesn't mean I should hammer on them until they accept what I want to call them.

noun
one opposed to belief in the existence of a god

I have clearly stated that I am not against the belief in the existence of god. I am against forcing those beliefs (or any other belief, religious or secular) on others. You, however, keep insisting I meet a definition that I clearly do not.

Get bent, asshole.

I won't engage you any further if you continue to use that kind of language/attitude.

The only context in which a word can be bad in and of itself, is a religious one. Words are just words, context isn't everything, but it's a whole lot.

It's always everyone else and never you with this problem, right? That must be a terrible burden for you.

If she would rather identify as anti-religious, but not as antitheist, that would mean she's opposed to religion only to the extent that it doesn't involve belief in deities.
Wouldn't it mean that she's opposed to religion regardless of whether it involves belief in deities?

Rhythm Wrote:In fairness people may not be born theists, but their becoming theists probably doesn't have anything to do with "brainwashing".  Indoctrination...sure, but indoctrination relies on having hooks in the person ..it's an issue of exploiting them.   You're not really washing anything, just building associations between existing impetus and a target exhibition of behavior or belief.

This is how you can be made to believe, made to kill...and ofc, made to kill for your belief.

To pick a nit, I think theism is transmissible from parents even if they don't engage in indoctrination. Small children are sponges for the ideas of adults even when the adults are not making an effort to make sure their kids have particular beliefs. Parents who are 'casual theists' will probably have children who pick up similar attitudes by environmental osmosis, even if they never have 'the God talk'.

Sorry if someone already answered lol. I know no one was for a while, and now I don't want to read through all these pages to see if anyone ever did.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Excited Penguin Wrote:That doesn't make any sense. Do you take issue with the brainwashing, or with the ideology being forced upon other people?

If you take issue with the brainwashing, then you might want to have a problem with everything society makes you do by way of law as well, for starters. Because that's textbook brainwashing as well.

If you take issue with the ideology being forced, you're an antitheist.
Indoctrination is a better word, but this method stems from theism itself. Without the overarching authority figure no one would feel the need to accept what is being handed down uncritically.

Accepting what is handed down uncritically is what children are evolved to do.
