What's the lamest defence of Theism you've ever heard?

I hear "brain in a vat" and it makes me think of Mars Attacks: I joked with a friend of mine about how I spend too much time thinking and don't get out enough, and how I'll eventually end up just a "brain in a vat" and I'll end up only talking like the aliens in 'Mars Attacks': "Ak! Ak! Ak! Ak! Ak! Ak!" ....and my friend started laughing a bit and said, " MTL, honey...you kinda already do. "
Since we're summoning up Sye Ten, and I wish we hadn't, we have to have his irritating "everybody already knows 'God' exists" presup bollocks.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I don't think I've ever seen such a hysterically stupid person before, and I have met a lot of very stupid religious people! It's not perfect (it literally couldn't be) but the design is pretty apparent when you look at how the cell works.

The whole tone of Church teaching in regard to woman is, to the last degree, contemptuous and degrading. - Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Deep in their hearts all humans know that the AllFather exists and his son, Thor, is his champion upon the Earth. We even have two week days named after them. The Abrahamic god, not so much. Problem is, complexity is not a sign of design. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. (February 17, 2016 at 10:04 pm)Simon Moon Wrote:It's not just complex, though. There are so many purposeful interactions that need to take place in order for the cell to regulate itself. These interactions are dependent on intricate structures, which are dependent on sequence of characters in DNA. When you remove one enzyme, the whole system might no longer be able to function. So the problem is that in order for it to work well enough to evolve (reproduce), you need tens of thousands of nucleotides in a proper sequence. It couldn't get there gradually, at least not by mutation and natural selection.(February 17, 2016 at 9:22 pm)AAA Wrote: It's not perfect (it literally couldn't be) but the design is pretty apparent when you look at how the cell works. Worst argument I heard:
"If evolution is true then how come there aren't slug people that slugs have evolved from?" |
