What is to be done about religion?
#41
RE: What is to be done about religion?
Having a private discussion with an entrenched theist is almost certainly going to be a waste of time, unless they come to you with genuine questions.

However, the same thing can be much more worthwhile when there is a potential audience, such as here on the forum. Even if Mr N Trenched will never change his mind about anything, reasoned arguments may help other onlookers to think.

Oh, dear. Is Mr. N Trenched You?
I took Mr. N Trenched to be an archetype, not a particular individual.

If it's referring to you specifically, then have my sincere apologies, MK...You're not an MF.

Religion is divisive. If it is divisive towards good ends, it should be preserved. If it is divisive towards no ends, it should be destroyed.

It is not known whether religion is toward good or null ends. Therefore, it's not known what should be done about religion.

I object fundamentally to the idea that "faith" is a way of learning or knowing anything. Almost all religious people seem to perpetuate this worthless and harmful myth.

But how would you react if someone, who according to his/her religious beliefs and morality, says that you are a criminal because you do X, and X is immoral and a crime according to this person and you should be punished accordingly?

I'd attempt to reason with them to find out why they felt that way. If they couldn't come up with good reasons for it, I'd dismiss their concerns and tell them that I thought they were wrong. Democracy and free speech is the road to conflict resolution.

What would you do?
