Upcoming Australian Federal Election

Upcoming Australian Federal Election
To the Australians on the forum, who are you planning to vote for in the coming Federal Election.

My answer is that I will vote Australian Greens, although if Malcolm Turnbull had showed some backbone and said screw you to the right wing of both the Liberal and National parties and introduced some sensible policies. For example; as scrapping the idea of a plebsitice on marriage equality and having instead a free vote in Parliament. Along with abolishing negative gearing and capital gains tax discounts. Not to mention reserving the anti renewable energy policies which were introduced when Tony Abbott was Prime Minister. I would have readily voted for the Liberal Party.

A free vote would have next to no chance of passing in the current Parliament. Indeed Labor Senator Joe Bullock announced his retirement from politics due to Labor's policy to bind MPs to vote in favour from 2019. Although if you ask me that's a bit premature for current party MPs to determine how future party MPs will have to vote. A plebiscite will almost certainly result in the passing of same-sex marriage. So yes it will cost an awful lot, but it will get done. Without it there's no chance of it passing any time in the foreseeable future even with a free vote.

And remember, back when Gillard was PM Senator Wong said she supported the party's policy against same sex marriage.

The good news is we have the Senate voting reforms, which are well overdue, passed into law now.

By upcoming, you obviously mean you've just begun the two+ year shit show circus of primaries and debates and campaigning like normal elections, right?

No we mean the yet-to-be set election that will be called and held within a period of about 4-6 weeks from when it's called.

RE: Upcoming Australian Federal Election
Well, I'm voting Labor because I always have and I know fuckall about politics.
I'm living in redneck Toowoomba so everyone around me will probably vote coalition.
But this is a good thread and if enough people reply I might actually learn something.

People didn't like Abbott, and he had a problem of not being able to commit to policies. I was annoyed when Scott Morrison became treasurer because he's no better than Hockey, and in fact he's worse since Hockey was a better spokesperson at least. The people who really lost when Abbott got rolled was Indigenous Australians. Abbott actually cared about, and understood Indigenous issues, whereas Rudd in 2007 promised to change Australia Day (aka Invasion Day) and then when Labor got elected he said "no". It really should be done, and there's no reason not to - move the day to February or another month. Turnbull seems to lack a comprehensive understanding of Indigenous affairs, and shows little empathy when discussing them. That's not to say he's as bad as Rudd, but he doesn't seem to come close to understanding the Indigenous affairs issues the way that Abbott did.

I'd hate to think America is exporting our rightwing economic bullshit ideas overseas, but, I mentioned in another thread that I was watching a press conference on CSPAN, yesterday, which was in a huge auditorium interviewing China's Premier and during it he said the same fucking shit our rightwingers say "Don't tax the rich".

Global corporatism is dangerous. Not the free market in and of itself, but the uber rich basically treating the entire population of the world as their personal tools without regards to environment or global stability.

RE: Upcoming Australian Federal Election
I think there are huge obstacles to taxing the wealthy. One being that anyone with a business can cap their tax rate at 30% because that's the company tax, whereas income tax brackets are 0-18k 0%, 18-37k 19%, 37-80k 32.5%, 80-180k 37%, 180k+ 45%. The problem here is that anyone who owns a business can, and does, pay themselves a salary of $37,000, plus superannuation ($3,330), then pay the company tax on profits (28.5% for a small business, 30% for everyone else), effectively saving themselves $11,400 in income tax if their salary was $180,000 in total as a small business. The system at the moment isn't fair, it needs improvement. What really needs to happen is income tax needs to be scaled back to a fairer spread. But creating equity at the higher tax brackets will make the taxation system more recessive (less fair to those at the bottom). It's really not an easy fix.

I disagree with you that a free vote wont pass the current Parliament. I have articles saying that a enough politicians have changed positions on this issue in recent months, which would mean if a free vote occurred, marriage equality would pass the Parliament (narrowly although).

Although I am willing to forgive Turnbull if the Coalition wins the federal election and the plebiscite on marriage equality is junked and replaced with a free vote in parliament.

I have enough on my plate worrying about politics on the North and South Islands, without fussing over what goes on with the West Island. Wink
